Thinkers around the world contribute to the body of knowledge known as ‘mathematics.’ These thinkers also form associations that help others understand how to enumerate relationships, foretell the future, and learn to see mathematical patterns. Through these associations, academics and non- academics alike are better able to see the world.

The following are some of the major mathematics associations that have contributed much to society.

The Mathematical Association of America (MAA)

The MAA is devoted to improving the teaching of university-level math. For instance, Carleton College is sponsored by MAA, and uses its curriculum to teach its students mathematics. Most students who want to pursue math professionally are part of the MAA membership.

National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)

The NCTM is a non-profit association that aims to improve math education for students in Canada and the US. The association is comprised of almost 130,000 teachers, scholars, and other experts. It is currently considered one of the largest mathematics associations in the world.

Canadian Mathematical Society

This association is dedicated to conducting mathematical research and offering scholarships to Canadian students. It also serves the academic community by publishing journals and holding math competitions. The Canadian Mathematical Society has partnerships with several other mathematical societies, including:

  • The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics
  • The Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society

Australian Mathematical Society (AustMS)

AustMS was founded all the way back in 1956, but remains among the most prominent of Australia’s mathematics associations. One of its main purposes is to promote the importance of math in today’s world.

Concluding Remarks

Algebra may explain how water becomes polluted and how people can get sick after drinking it. Mathematics, therefore, remains as important as ever. For this reason, associations like these continue to promote mathematics with a view to making the world a better place.
